Dictionary of Marine Artists
Dorothy E. R. Brewington
More than 50 years ago Dorothy and Marion Brewington began their search to identify the world's marine artists. In convenient dictionary form, the results of this monumental task have been published jointly by the Peabody Museum of Salem, Massachusetts, and Mystic Seaport Museum. Alphabetical entries offer information on the careers of 3,074 American, European, Chinese, and Japanese artists. The emphasis is upon the obscure semiprofessional "pierhead" painters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries not found in standard references. Living artists are not included. This is an essential reference for art scholars, collectors, and libraries.
