Product Categories

The Magento Category feature organizes products and provides the structure for the website's menus. Magento refers to the top-level categories as "Root categories" and the lower-level categories within them as "Subcategories." Root categories appear in the main menu and the footer menu on the website.

All category-related fields can be edited at Catalog | Manage Categories. Use the folder tree in the left sidebar to find categories. Click on the name of the category you want to edit. When done, use the Save Category button in the top right.

To add a new category. Find the parent of your new category in the folder tree in the left sidebar and click on its name to select it. Click on the Add Subcategory button above the folder tree. Complete all of the fields described below--only Description and Image are optional. Create products as needed, then add products to your new category.

To add or remove a product in a category. Select the category from the folder tree. Choose the Category Products tab.

When you first enter this tab, the list of products in the middle of the page shows only those products that are already included in the category. (If the category has no assigned products, this area is blank, which can be confusing.)

To assign a new  product. Click on the Reset Filter button in the top right, then use the search boxes to find the product(s) you want. Check the box at the left side of that product's row in the table.

To remove an assigned product. Uncheck the box at the left side of that product's row in the table.

To re-order the products within a category. Use the Position field at the right side of each product's row in the table. Lower numbers appear first in the category listing.

To rearrange the order of categories. Click on a category name in the folder tree and drag it up or down to a new location.

To remove a category. Select the category from the folder tree. Remove all the products from the category. Use the Delete Category button in the top right.

When done, use the Save Category button in the top right.

A Name. The Name of the product. On the General Information tab. Repeat the name in the Page Title field.

C Description. On the General Information tab. While this may be copied from some other site, always edit the description using the WYSIWYG editor to clean it up before saving.

E Image. A single image may be uploaded from your computer through the Images button on the General Information tab. There is also a Thumbnail Image button--the Crisp and Clean theme does not use this image.

Backend data fields

Is Active. On the General Information tab. Choose Yes to make the category visible to customers on the website.

Include in Navigation Menu. On the General Information tab. Choose Yes to make the category appear in the main menu on the website.

URL Key. This is the text that will be used in the URL for this category. It should be short, descriptive and contain no spaces (hyphens may be used between words if absolutely necessary.) Once you have build a category and added products, do not change this URL Key if at all possible--once search engines have started indexing and tracking usage you will confuse them by changing this value.
