William Meredith served as a Naval Aviator during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He has received the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for poetry in 1987 and 1996 repectively.
The 23 poems collected in "The Wreck of the Thresher and Other Selected Poems" were choosen for their evocative references to the Sea and Meredith's Navy Service inspired many of them.
