    Description

The inaugural issue of the new publication from Mystic Seaport Museum, Mainsheet: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies. Publishing a blend of rigorous peer-reviewed scholarship, colorful feature stories, and art and literature, Mainsheet aims to reach both researchers and a general public interested in maritime studies. Mainsheet is multidisciplinary and global in scope, with issue themes that align with the projects we are engaging with at Mystic Seaport Museum. The print journal is full-color, perfect-bound and designed to be a beautiful addition to your library.

This inaugural issue, published in 2024, is on the theme of Maritime Social History. It includes contributions from scholars Kevin Dawson, Alison Glassie, Alice C.M. Kwok, Timothy D. Walker, Caroline C. Ummenhofer, Jason R. Mancini, Silvermoon Mars LaRose, and Akeia de Barros Gomes. A photo essay features remarkable images taken by workers aboard the world’s cargo ships during and after the Covid-19 crisis, and there are features on boat preservation in Brazil, the use and meaning of African miniature canoes, and on a Viking ship model in the Mystic Seaport Museum collection. Book reviews and listings for upcoming museum exhibits and academic events round out the content.
