Fireships on the Hudson is one of 5 paintings in the American Revolutionary War series. In July 1776 the British sent a small squadron of warships into the Hudson River, the Pheonix, 44 guns, the Rose, 20 guns, and two small tenders. On the night of August 16, the ships were at anchor when two vessels were sighted nearby. Their crews were seen setting fires and abandoning ship — the American rebels were using fireships, the most feared form of attack against combustible wooden warships.
