SABINO, Steamboat
SKU:WSP.7.85
The 57' 1" steamboat SABINO is the oldest wooden, coal-fired steamboat in regular operation in the U.S. Built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine, by W. Irving Adams, she spent most of her career ferrying passengers and cargo between Maine towns and islands. The SABINO was purchased in 1974 to serve as a working exhibit at Mystic Seaport. She is operated during the warmer months for the enjoyment and education of visitors. The SABINO was formally designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992. SABINO is presently undergoing a major restoration in the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. She has been hauled out of the water and moved into the main shop where the shipwrights can work on her. Visitors can observe the work from a gallery above the shop floor. The majority of Sabino’s restoration will be complete by early summer 2016 when she will be launched back into the water; however, the vessel will operate as a dockside exhibit for the foreseeable future until her boiler is replaced.
