From Geoff's book The Marine Art of Geoff Hunt:
"A lot of sail area was required to shift a first-rate ship of the line like the Victory, displacing some 3000 tons, and when the wind was light even more than the usual sail plan was needed.  Additional lightweight sails called stunsails were rigged out on each side on long booms...and these gave a huge spread of canvas.  If Victory had set main stunsails on both sides she would have spanned 170 ft across.  These sails were sometimes regarded as expendable: for example, during the long approach to the Battle of Trafalgar the wind was very light and all the British ships carried stunsails, which at the last moment were simply cut away and allowed to fall into the sea.  Their crews were fully occupied manning all the guns, and few hands could be spared to recover the sails."
